COSMOS (COSMetic Organic Standard) is a Europe-wide private standard that was first developed by five charter members back in 2002:

BDIH (Germany). - Cosmebio (France). - Ecocert Greenlife SAS (France). - ICEA (Italy). - Soil Association (Great Britain).

They combined forces under an AISBL (international non-profit organization based in Brussels, officially recognized in 2010) the purpose of which was to set out minimum common requirements, harmonize organic and natural cosmetic certification rules, and lobby institutions in the sector's interests.

The first COSMOS standard was published in 2010. It has evolved over the years to become a unified global standard in natural and organic beauty with over 5000 certified products, 74% of which are certified Organic as opposed to Natural. The values of COSMOS closely match our own at Codibel and we aim to materialize these values through our new ranges of products, such as Pure Elements Organics.

COSMOS also aims to improve the overall sustainability of cosmetics whether it is through the origin of the raw materials used, the type of packaging used, or the biodegradability at the end of the life cycle. We believe this is the right way forward as a responsible manufacturer, and indeed is the ONLY way forward if we want to preserve the reserves that our planet can offer for the future generations.

The guiding principles of the current COSMOS standard are based on the following :

• promote the use of products from organic agriculture, and respect biodiversity;

• use natural resources responsibly, and respect the environment;

• use processing and manufacturing that are clean and respectful of human health and the environment;

• integrate and develop the concept of “Green Chemistry”.
